Housestaff Stipends for 2017 - 2018:
Fringe Benefits: 23%
Residents receive free medical and optional dental and / or vision insurance. In addition, residents may open a flexible spending account and choose Emory's 401k program. A copy of the Housestaff Manual, which provides details regarding additional benefits and leave, may be viewed at http://med.emory.edu/GME
The department also provides residents in good standing a $2200 stipend allotted over four years of training to be used towards educational materials, such as textbooks, conference expenses, or board review guides or courses. Each resident receives $500 for conducting the required research project during residency.
Residents have three weeks of vacation per academic year. During the Christmas / New Year holiday, "block scheduling" allows all residents additional time with family and friends during one of these two periods.
Work hours are compliant with the ACGME guidelines regarding the maximum of 80 hours per week averaged over four weeks. Most rotations average 65-70 hours per week. The program uses the web-based New Innovations software for electronic reporting.
Interns participate in the night float system, covering two 6 week blocks of nights during their intern year. Their weekend call during all other rotations is typically one 12 hour shift, with one "golden" weekend each rotation.
