Research focus and special interests
Dr. Berga’s research focuses on understanding the impact of psychogenic and metabolic stresses upon the reproductive system and as a cause of infertility. She has been funded by the National Institutes of Health to study the neuromodulation of hypothalamic GnRH release by stressors in women and in female monkeys. Another research focus is elucidating the genesis of the aberrant GnRH drive responsible for anovulation in women with polycystic ovary syndrome. In addition, she is an investigator for the Women’s Health Initiative, the NIH-funded, multi-center trial to document the impact of good nutrition and hormone replacement therapy upon the health of menopausal women. More recently, in an effort to better understand the panoply of effects sex steroids have upon brain function, she and her team have begun to define the impact using state-of-the-art neuroimaging techniques. This research is funded in part by a grant from Pfizer. She also is active clinically in treating couples with infertility, women with endocrine disorders, and menopausal women.
