50th Annual John D. Thompson
Resident and Fellow Research Day a Great Success

On April 15, the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics held the 50th Annual John D. Thompson Resident and Fellow Research Day. Nine graduating residents and four graduating fellows presented their completed projects; topics included from contraception, health literacy, and assisted reproductive technology.

In addition, Methodius Tuuli, MD, MPH, presented the 33rd W. Newton Long lecture, “Prevention of Surgical Site Infection after Cesarean: An Evidence-Based Perspective,” and Ritu Salani, MD, MBA, presented the 27th John D. Thompson lecture, “Sitting is the New Smoking: Management of Obesity for Gynecologists.”

The following evening, the department hosted a banquet to celebrate 50 years of resident research and to award prizes for the previous day’s presentations. The following proposals (presented on April 13) were honored with awards sponsored by the Georgia Obstetrical and Gynecological Society and the Emory Grady Society of Gynecologists and Obstetricians:

Outstanding Research Proposal by a Fellow: Kyle Gonzales, DO, for his project "Maternal Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells - A Novel Source of sFlt-1 in Preeclampsia.”

Outstanding Research Proposal by a Resident: Chisom Ezenekwe, MD, for her project "Contraceptive Knowledge, Practices, and Pregnancy Intent in Women with Sickle Cell Disease."

Excellence in Resident Research: Bradley Sipe, MD, for his project "Risk of Mechanical Dilation for Cervical Ripening in HIV+ Patients.”

Excellence in Resident Research: Leilah Zahedi-Spung, MD, for her project "Perceived Barriers to Antepartum HIV Medication Therapy Adherence in HIV-infected Pregnant Women.”

Awards for completed projects:

Outstanding Research by a Fellow: Lisa Hofler, MD, MPH, for her project "Implementation of Immediate Postpartum LARC in Georgia: Stakeholder Analysis and Barriers Analysis.”

Outstanding Research Conducted by a Resident: Rachel Shulman, MD, for her project "Impact of Maternal Knowledge of Recommended Weight Gain in Pregnancy on Gestational Weight Gain.”

Excellence in Resident Research: Jade Stafford, MD, for her project "Health Literacy and Associated Outcomes in the Postpartum Period at Grady Memorial Hospital.”

Excellence in Resident Research: Adrienne Zertuche, MD, MPH, for her project "Severe Maternal Morbidity During Delivery Hospitalization: Georgia, United States, 1999-2012.”

Horowitz Named Executive Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development

Ira R. Horowitz, MD, SM, has been promoted to a new position in the Emory University School of Medicine. He will serve as the Executive Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development. ”I hope to establish a synergy across all components of Emory Medicine that will translate to increased opportunity for professional growth and development for the faculty,” he said. “My goal will be to build upon the foundation of my predecessors.” Dr. Horowitz is the John D. Thompson Professor and Chair of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics as well as the Associate Director of Emory Clinic.
