Join Us for the 49th Annual John D. Thompson
Resident & Fellow Research Day

On Wednesday, April 22, Emory’s Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics will host the 49th Annual John D. Thompson Resident & Fellow Research Day. The event will be held in Glenn Auditorium at Emory University Hospital Midtown, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Throughout the day, graduating residents and fellows will present the findings from their research projects, and we will welcome two distinguished guests for our annual lectures:

26th John D. Thompson Lecture - 10:00 a.m.
"The Indigenous Vaginal Microbiome"
Sebastian Faro, MD, PhD, Clinical Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Baylor College of Medicine

32nd W. Newton Long Lecture - 2:30 p.m.
"Nausea and Vomiting of Pregnancy"
Jennifer Niebyl, MD, Chair Emeritus, Professor and Vice-Chair Obstetrics, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine

Our department was the first in the country to host a resident and fellow research day, thanks to the vision of Dr. John D. Thompson, Professor Emeritus and Chairman of the Department (1961-1986). We anticipate that next year’s 50th anniversary of Resident & Fellow Research Day will include special events for our alumni. Although our trainees have chosen various career paths, they remain united by the research project conducted in their time as a resident or fellow.

All are welcome to attend the 49th Annual John D. Thompson Resident & Fellow Research Day; no RSVP is required.

Fusco Joins Faculty

We are delighted to welcome Lisa Fusco, MD, to our faculty. Dr. Fusco is a familiar face, having completed the department’s fellowship in pelvic surgery in 2013. Prior to that, she attended Ross University School of Medicine for her medical degree and completed her residency at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut. Dr. Fusco will join our team at Grady. See Dr. Fusco’s faculty bio.

Faculty Achieve Research Honors

Congratulations to Alan Gordon, MD, and Lisa Haddad, MD, MS, MPH, on receiving research honors from the School of Medicine. Dr. Gordon was welcomed into Emory's Millipub Club for a paper that has garnered more than 1,000 citations. Dr. Haddad received the Emory 1% award, given to faculty who receive study section scores in the top one percentile on a grant proposal. Read more about these awards.

A Successful Match Day

This year, our residency program received more than 800 applications for our nine spots. In October, November, and December, we interviewed 104 candidates. On March 20, we learned who matched with our program and will make up the incoming class of residents. We're pleased to introduce them: Meet the Class of 2019.

Staff Spotlight: Bernadette Ennis

Bernadette Ennis, LPN, arrived at Emory 15 years ago for her very first nursing job. She was placed in our division of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS), and it was such a great fit that she’s been one of the nurses for this division ever since. Meet Bernadette.
