A Strong Commitment to Menopause Care

Our department now has four faculty members who are recognized as NAMS (North American Menopause Society) Certified Menopause Practitioners:
Penny Castellano, MD, NCMP
Mary Dolan, MD, MPH, NCMP
Victoria Green, MD, MHSA, JD, MBA, NCMP
Taniqua Miller, MD, NCMP

These providers passed the competency examination created by NAMS, demonstrating their expertise in the care of patients at menopause and beyond. There are only 13 NAMS Certified Menopause Practitioners in the state of Georgia; the fact that four of them are at Emory demonstrates our department’s strong commitment to care for these women.

“I pursued this certification because I am interested in menopause and the care of older women,” says Dr. Dolan, who became certified in 2014. “Women may live 30-40% of their lives after menopause and there are preventive measures to optimize their health. It is important for patients to be aware that they will get the most up-to-date information from a provider who has this certification.”

Dr. Miller, who received her certification this year, adds: “The impact of menopausal symptoms on a women's life can dramatically alter quality of life, and I want to be able to completely treat my patients to preserve well-being through this transition and beyond. By attaining this certification, I hope that patients can recognize me as a provider willing and aptly train to partner with them for their midlife care needs.”

According to ACOG, an estimated 6,000 women in the United States reach menopause every day. As women live longer, many will spend up to 40 percent of their lives in the postmenopausal stage.

Our department is committed to serving these women, and in addition to our support of providers who pursue NAMS certification, we are also developing a comprehensive, multidisciplinary Midlife and Menopause Medicine Center. This center will create a care model that will decrease the negative effects of menopause for women and provide preventive care for the debilitating illnesses that postmenopausal women often face, including osteoporosis, heart disease, and certain cancers.

More information about the Emory Midlife and Menopause Medicine Center will be coming soon; we are excited to empower women with increased knowledge about this stage of life and encourage them to take greater responsibility for their health and well-being.
