The Society of Family Planning (SFP) will honor Robert Hatcher, MD, MPH, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, with a namesake mentorship award at their annual meeting in October.
SFP created the Robert A. Hatcher Family Planning Mentor Award in 2013 in recognition of the extraordinary role in educating and mentoring family planning health providers played by Dr. Hatcher, who will also be the first recipient. The award bearing his name will be given annually to individuals who have demonstrated similar dedication to supporting and furthering the careers of a new generation of medical professionals in the field of family planning.
Dr. Hatcher joined the faculty of Emory University in 1968 and ran the family planning program at Grady Memorial Hospital. His notes from lectures to medical school students became Contraceptive Technology, the leading reference book in the field, which is now in its 20th edition. He has also led Contraceptive Technology conferences for 25 years. His pocket guide, Managing Contraception, is distributed to every medical student in the United States.
Dr. Hatcher has trained thousands of medical professionals about contraception and family planning services, and he continues to work with students despite his recent retirement.
The Robert A. Hatcher Family Planning Mentor Award will be one of three awards presented annually by SFP.
